The tape recorder represents permanent memories, ones that a human mind would normally forget. Haley decides to record her friends talking in the ARTT room as a way to remember them years down the road. She is sad that she has very little memory of her mother because she was so young when her mother died. She cannot really remember what she looked like or how her voice sounded. Ashton too comments that over time it is difficult to remember the sound of someone's voice and that a voice is an important memory and something that makes someone who they are. The kids all promise to gather in 20 years time along with the tape recorder to reminisce over these special days.
