Why does Harriet continue with her residency as a brain surgeon even though she hates it in the novel, Happy Place?

Harriet hates her work as a brain surgeon, and she only continues with it in order to impress her family and win their affection. Harriet's father, though emotionally distant, puts pressure on Harriet to become a surgeon because he never got to live his own dreams.
