Polonius sends Reynaldo to Laertes to find out if Laertes is behaving badly. Polonius tells Reynaldo to pretend to have heard bad rumors about Laertes and give Laertes's friends a chance to agree or disagree. In fact, Polonius gives him permission to lie, though he claims he does not want Laertes embarrassed.
