Gary Paulsen tells Guts in the first-person reflective omniscient narrative mode, from his own point of view. Paulsen writes the book with the intent of revealing the parts of his own life to readers on which the Brian books were based. As such, there is no better person to tell the events of Paulsen’s own life than Paulsen himself. Paulsen personally guides readers through important events in his life which either translated into, or directly inspired the events of the Brian novels. Paulsen does this because he has received enough letters and questions from fans that he decided it would be best to actually write about his life in book-form to answer the questions that so many people have had. To do so, Paulsen simply relies on his own life experiences.
