In Part II, Applebaum points out that the long train ride across Russia was in many ways symbolic of the break between the prisoners' old lives and new ones. They were no longer considered Soviet citizens, and they lost most, if not all, of their rights. Everything familiar was gone, replaced by the atrocities of the camps.
