Why does Carrot join the Night Watch in the novel, Guards! Guards!?

When Carrot is told that he is a human, rather than a dwarf, he is also told that he needs to join his own kind (especially as his adoptive parents are concerned about his relationship with Minty). He has heard that joining the Night Watch will make a real man of him.
