Why is Brandon not in school on September 11th in the novel, Ground Zero?

Brandon is not in school on September 11 because he has been suspended from school. The school bully, Stuart Pendleton, took his friend's Wolverine gloves and would not give them back, so Brandon punched him in the nose.
