Ray Kroc is the narrator of the book. He is a Bohemian man, and attributes his success to the strictness of his culture and the way he was brought up. His father was a very influential man and taught him the meaning of hard work. Ray was the happiest when he was working and never liked to waste time. He thought of school as a waste of time and dropped out before finishing high school to join the war effort. He never actively served because the war was over before he got a chance, but his diligence would have paid off as a paramedic, which is what he signed up for. He was a skilled pianist and played in a lot of night clubs to make money.
