Achilles experiences a lot of shame.... he was shamed when Briseis was taken from him, he was shamed when he refused to do his duty, and he was shamed by Patroclus' death.... something that he believed resulted from his refusal to fight. Altogether, it is this pervading sense of shame that leads Achilles to kill and desecrate Hector's body, and through this act, he once again brings shame and dishonor to himself. Unfortunately, I see no evidence that shame actually helped Achilles, though it did enable the Greeks to win the Trojan War.
