The intermediate state of the soul occurs after death when the soul lives on awaiting the second coming.

In the Old Testament this is mentioned the Pslams:

"But God will ransom my soul from the power of Sheol, for He will receive me"

The son of Ishmael "died and was gathered to his kindred".
