The cherry tree Rakesh plants symbolizes the beauty of new growth and life as well as the power of patience. Rakesh is initially impatient with the speed at which the cherry tree grows until Grandfather teaches him that the tree will grow steadily at its own rate if dutifully attended. When Rakesh learns this lesson, the tree grows and produces the sweetest cherries.
