Why does Harry insist on receiving an invitation into the Malones' home, in Chapter 12?

Harry sends one of the S.I. detectives to fetch Mrs. Malone, and ask her to formally invite Harry into her home. Meanwhile, Harry explains that because the Malones made a stable home there, their threshold is strong, and if he crosses it without an invitation. His powers will be considerably weakened while he is inside the home.
