Mortimer assumes that Harry arrived at his home on behalf of the White Council because Mortimer did something wrong. Harry uses Mortimer's fear of the Council's wrath, and his assumption that Harry has come on their behalf, to convince Mortimer to give him information about the being Harry is pursuing.
