According to Harry's description, what is a ghost?

Harry explains that ghosts are not sentient beings, and they are not the real person they represent. The person is gone, and moved on to another stage of being; the ghost is a residual image of the person as they were when they died. They disappear when they are destroyed, or when they fulfill their purpose.
