Why do Gabriella and Chloe work as nannies in the novel, Graceful Burdens?

Gabriella and Chloe are two unlicensed women, and thus, they are disallowed from marrying or having children. In response, the women work as nannies for Seraphina and Paul's children, Geordie and Eliza.
