In the novel, New York represents an urban contrast to Los Angeles whose cultural and social magnificence makes up for its often oppressive quality of life conditions. New York represents museums, parks, Broadway, the classical and experimental stages, a place where people interact with a feeling of community where miraculous events seem to occur at any moment.
