The novel is split into 35 chapters following three different characters. Casiopea’s story is told chronologically from her life in Uukumil to her final walk along the Black Road to give the throne back to Hun-Kamé. Vucub-Kamé’s sections follow this same logic and fill in the blanks between Casiopea’s travels by explaining what happens after she and Hun-Kamé leave. However, Martín’s chapters often take a few steps backwards, such why he acted a certain way in one of Casiopea’s previous scenes or giving more information about his upbringing and family cruelty. These three characters are all brought together during the final walk on the Black Road, and continue alongside each other until Casiopea and Martín survive and go their separate ways.
