Who is Mary Custis Lee from Gods and Generals and what is their importance?

Mary Custis Lee was Robert E. Lee's wife. During his long absence, she grew sickly and suffered greatly with arthritis, a condition so painful that she spent nearly all of her time in bed. When Lee saw his wife after the Seven Days Battles, she was crippled and required a wheelchair.
