JEB Stuart was the commander of Lee's cavalry troops. Before the war, he accompanied Lee to Harper's Ferry during the insurrection, where he delivered a message to John Brown giving him the opportunity to surrender.

During the war, Stuart's horse mounted troops served as the eyes and ears of Lee's army. He repeatedly brought Lee vital information that enabled him to defeat his northern opponents. Stuart, however, was viewed by the other southern officers as reckless and overly showy.

When Jackson was wounded at Chancellorsville, his second in command sends for Stuart to take over the battle. Stuart is frustrated in commanding the infantry because they cannot turn and maneuver quickly.
