Ijeoma's diary entries symbolize survival. When Ijeoma first begins learning the English language, she feels repelled by its sterility and harshness. However, the longer she is in Amalike, the more she relies on the language and her diaries in order to process her feelings. The diaries also grant her a place to write to Chukwu, to ask questions, and to seek refuge. They ultimately help her withstand her exile in Amalike.
