Amalike symbolizes violence. The first time Ichulu villagers enter Amalike, the king laughs at them, curses them, and has his men kill six of them. Ichulu knows that the Amalike people have embraced the white man and the white man's god. Because they neither understand the white man's customs nor his religious systems, they fear Amalike. Indeed, when Ijeoma is exiled here later in the novel, she experiences little but brutality and aggression.
