The Marketplace in Thies

On the first day of the strike, the marketplace of Thies (located just outside the rail-yards) is the setting for the first confrontation between the strikers and the law. The marketplace is also the setting for an important, if subtly dramatized, confrontation between Samba and Maimouna, and also the death of one of Maimouna's beloved children.
