In 1947, black railroad workers went on complete strike on the Dakar-Niger railway to at least win similar rights as the French rail workers. They wanted a living wage, sick pay and pensions: they wanted to be treated as human. While their ill-treatment was racially motivated, Capitalism was used to justify paying black workers less. Simply put, the company saved money by abusing their black workers.
