Marina was Severin’s mother. She was a chemist but could not get hired because she was married with a child. Severin remembered her mother rejoicing because she finally got a job in a lab. When Severin went the next day to see her mother in the lab, she learned her mother had been hired only as a lab assistant. Severin tells her mother’s story to demonstrate how deserving women were often not hired for positions in research simply because they were women.
