What is the importance of the church tower in the novel, Girl in Hyacinth Blue?

The church tower is the location where Aletta Pieters has her affair, and later gives birth to her twin babies. This is also where Adriaan Kuypers watches as Aletta Pieters is hung for the murder of the girl child.
