While Bontsha and Tevye are entirely folk images, cherished symbols of a tradition, Gimpel—though he and his wife are no less symbols— significantly has to win back his faith, and he wins it in visions, in dreams, that give a background of playfulness and irony to this marvel-ously subtle story.
