For Ghost, guns symbolize both fear and a reason to run. Some years before the novel, Ghost’s father attempted to murder Ghost and his mother with a gun. This, in turn, led to Ghost’s father going to jail. It becomes the source of why Ghost runs so fast - to escape from the life he has lived.
