What do we learn about Gertie's mother in Chapter Two?

In Chapter Two, we learn that when Gertie was just a baby, her mother left to live on her own in a house on Jones Street. The only things she had left behind were a locket, Gertie's father, and Gertie. Gertie's father said that Rachel Collins had left because she was not happy and had to find out what would make her happy.
