Red is the color of a wide range of emotions, from sadness to anger, including embarrassment. The eyes of Genesis’s father when he drinks are always “blood red” (111), announcing his impending violence. When she returns to fetch her belongings after allowing herself to be vulnerable in Mrs. Hill’s class, Genesis does not want to make contact with her “crybaby red eyes” (114). Upon discovering that her husband has once again come home drunk, the face of Genesis’s mom is “flaming” (194).
