In the opening scene, laughter represents Genesis’s image in other people’s eyes, born of contempt, while in the closing scene, it mirrors her new self-image, born of acceptance. In Chapter One, Genesis focuses on the laughter of her bullies: “the copycats ‘hee-hee-hee’ again” (4). Throughout the novel, the reader hears the “cackling echoes through the mirror” (10 and “that mean-girl giggle” (79) to which Genesis is subjected.
