What is the theme in Garden of Shadows by V.C. Andrews?

One major theme in the novel, Garden of Shadows, is incest. This theme is illustrated through Malcolm's confused memories of his mother.... perhaps based upon the inappropriate actions of his mother, and his subsequent abuse to his wife. The theme is also evident in Malcolm's relationship with his father's widow.
