Why did Bruce Bechdel tell his daughter he was going to Danville in Chapter 6?

Bruce Bechdel told Alison that he was going to Danville to see a psychiatrist. She notes, "Perhaps this was a preemptive strategy recommended by his lawyer." By this, she means that he began seeing a therapist as a result of the charges against him regarding the underage boys.
