Bechdel was ten when she began exhibiting obsessive-compulsive traits. These first appeared with obsessive counting and and avoidance of odd numbers or multiples of the number 13. They progressed into a variety of odd behaviors, such as the need to perform rituals before entering doorways and the need to perform tasks in a specific manner or else re-starting the tasks.
