What symbolism is related to the Swiss Army knife that appears in Chapter 3?

Bechdel describes buying the knife after reading her mother's disapproving letter after she had come out to her parents. She equates its symbolism as that of self-reliance, but upon opening it in her room, she cut her hand. She then smeared the blood in her journal to illustrate her anguish in literal form.
