What symbolism can be seen in the fallen trees in Chapter 6?

The author relates the maple trees that were felled by a massive storm surrounding their home with her father's legal troubles. No other house in the neighborhood was touched by the storm other than the Bechdel home. Likewise, with her father's trial, it was a narrow escape for the family and they were not forced to move.
