Helen Bechdel was in rehearsals for Oscar Wilde's play The Importance of Being Earnest. This is another allusion to Wilde, whom the author compares repeatedly to her father throughout the chapter. Wilde was persecuted and went to trial for sodomy and gross indecency and was ultimately imprisoned.
