The locusts, which appear every 17 years, symbolize the coming of age into adolescence of the author as well as the sexual exploits of her father. Bruce Bechdel became sexually involved with a 17-year-old boy and his brother and the author goes into detail regarding the mating habits of the locusts in comparison.
