What does the title of Chapter 2, "A Happy Death" allude to?

The chapter title alludes to a novel by Albert Camus, which the author found in the house after her father's death. In the existential novel, Bruce Bechdel had highlighted one line: "He discovered the cruel paradox by which we always deceive ourselves twice about the people we love--first to their advantage, then to their disadvantage."
