What did the author learn about obsessive-compulsive disorder from reading Dr. Spock?

Bechdel read Dr. Spock in an attempt to understand her obsessive-compulsion and learned that this disorder can begin developing between the ages of six to eleven. The patterns of behavior closely matched those that Bechdel exhibited and suggested repressed anger as a cause for the condition.
