Bechdel did not reveal the fact that she had begun menstruation to her mother because she was involved in writing her master's thesis and in rehearsals for the play. She had given Alison sanitary napkins the year before, which Bechdel kept hidden in her closet. She hoped that by ignoring it, it would go away.
