Bechdel describes her family as not being physically affectionate at all. In Chapter 1, she describes one instance where she kissed her father's knuckles at bedtime and was embarrassed and ran away. She likewise describes her parents as not being affectionate toward one another, with only two instances where she ever witnessed any affectionate gestures between them.
