The Financial Times symbolizes Saunders’s class and therefore his mindset and experience of life. As a wealthy man, Saunders believes in his superiority in both intellect and worth. In fact, his wealthy status provides him the safety of first class. The wolf also reading the Financial Times has similar expectations of the world as Saunders: he will not participate in the activities of the lower class. The Financial Times simultaneously symbolizes the similarities between them and the tension between predator and prey. It highlights that the belief in superiority and the security of wealth does not make it so.
