Who is Garrion?

Garrion is a member of the guerilla group to which Petrona's younger brother Ramon belonged. He is attractive and charismatic, but ultimately ruthless and violent. He makes his way into Petrona's life by saying that he wants to protect her, but as the narrative unfolds, he exploits her and eventually does nothing as she is assaulted and raped by others in his cell. As the narrative concludes, he tells a series of lies designed to keep her under his control, lies that she knows for what they are but is too unwilling to again be unsafe to try and live according to the truth.
