Why were tensions between whites and Asian-American's high in 1982?

In 1982, there were layoffs from the major employers in Detroit, automotive manufacturers. Japanese cars were becoming popular and were cutting into sales of American-made vehicles. Many auto workers blamed Asian-Americans, even if they were not Japanese, for the layoffs and loss of jobs.
