Where was Lily's great-grandfather employed when he arrived in America in the 1800s?

Lily's great-grandfather ended up working for very little pay on the transcontinental railroad. The work was difficult and dangerous. Chinese railroad workers would drill a hole into mountainous rock, pour black dynamite powder into it, and light a fuse. They had only minutes to run away and avoid being caught in the detonation.
