Tembi wears a locket in which she treasures a small amount of Saro's ashes. This is symbolic of her new life as a widow as well as her continued love and attachment to her husband. It is a way of keeping him close with her at all times and it is representative of the third stage of their marriage: the one in which she is his widow. The locket also represents the fact that Tembi has a personal grief and death ritual of her own. She inters or scatters the rest of his ashes according to his wishes and those of his family, but the locket is part of her personal ritual and process.
