The sister promise is a symbol of Anya and Morven’s bond, and Anya’s loyalty to her sister and her kingdom. This symbol will resonate with a younger female audience. The novel opens with Morven screaming, and Anya finding her to see what has happened and how she can help. Morven sobs and tells her that the Duke has transformed her new love Prince Denholm, and begs for Anya’s help, making her not only promise to transform him back, but make a “sister promise” (10).
