How did Sam react when Molly discovered him coming down from the mountain?

When Molly saw Sam coming down from the bridge, he pretended to be one of the workers. He pretended to inspect the bolts and take notes, and then he dropped over the bridge and climbed down to the river shore.... vanishing into the cattails.
