The Heroic Slave by Frederick Douglass
The Heroic Slave, published in 1853, is loosely based on actual people and events. In 1841, the slave ship, Creole, was hijacked when the slaves aboard broke free from their shackles and overtook the ship. After arriving in Nassau, they were allowed to go free by the British soldiers guarding the port, barring the nineteen men who led the mutiny. except for the nineteen leaders of the mutiny. First published in the Frederick Douglass's Paper, the story was also included in Autographs for Freedom (1853).
Focusing on the life of protagonist, Madison Washington, the novella parallels Douglass' Narrative, which was published eight years before, as well as the lectures Douglass gave.
