Who is Maxwell Kane from Freak the Mighty and what is their importance?

I think that Max is the protagonist of the story. He is a big strong boy who struggles in school. He does not have any friends until he meets Kevin. Max struggles with his lack of school success as well as his father being a violent criminal. Max and Kevin take care of each other. Max is able to learn what is important in life through his relationship with Kevin.
